Participants- Familiarize yourself with and follow these Event guidelines:
- The Kanc and all connecting roadways remain open to the public during the Crank the Kanc event.
- There is limited, unreliable, and often nonexistant cell phone service along the course of this event.
- Cycles used in Crank the Kanc must be propelled solely by the rider’s legs or hands moving in a circular motion, without electric or other assistance.
- No tow-behinds and No child carriers are allowed.
- Any hand-cycle or recumbent cycle is required to have a pole and flag attached for visibility.
- For Registration Categories based on age- your Race Age is your age on December 31st of the year in which the Crank the Kanc event you are registering for takes place. Note- This is newly implemented in 2025 to better conform with cycling racing norms.
- Crank the Kanc is a public (non-USA Cycling) event.
- Race waivers must be signed on-line as part of registration.
- Race Service tent and Parking lot are located at the Kennett Middle School, 176 Main St, in Conway, NH and all racers should park at the school. The entrance off Route 16 to the Service tent and parking lot is to the right of the school. Racers will make their way south on NH Rt 16 and then right at the Traffic light onto NH Rt 112/Kancamagus Highway to the START area at the NH Fish & Game property entrance approximately 1/2 mile from the traffic light.
- START times will be posted on this web page as soon as determined, generally 1-2 days after closing of Registration.
- RESULTS will be posted on this web page as soon as possible after the completion of the event. -typically before 6:00PM on race day
- Mask use is optional.
- Bibs/Numbers, pins and any other race materials must be picked up at the Service Tent on race day.
- Bib/Number placement is on the RIGHT side of your jersey. The number must be clearly readable when you’re on your bicycle, in riding position, by someone standing on the right side of the road as you ride by. If your number is unreadable, your finish time might not be recorded correctly.
- We will have a shuttle to carry small personal bags of clothing, etc. to the Finish Area for racers- leave these at the Service Tent for transport to the Finish Area. Plastic bags will be available at the Service Tent for this purpose.
- Prizes will be mailed to the winners.
- Snacks such as bagels, bananas, and bottled water will be available at the FINISH area.
- Per U.S. Forest Service: No warm up riding on the Kanc. Racers are NOT allowed to warm up on the roadway leading up to or on the course. We suggest you bring a portable trainer to use in the Kennett M.S. parking lot to warm up prior to starting the race.
- The first scheduled 3-Person Team racers leave the START line at 8:30 a.m. Subsequent teams depart in bib number order at 2 minute intervals. All team members must be present at the designated start time.
- The first scheduled Solo racer leaves the START line at 9:00 a.m. Subsequent racers depart in bib number order at 15 second intervals.
- To avoid congestion in the START area, racers should arrive at the START area between 5 and 10 minutes before their designated start time. Please do not arrive at the START area earlier than 10 minutes before your start time.
- Any Team or Solo racer not present at the START area and ready to go at their designated start time is subject to disqualification.
- Because of the narrow and winding nature of the highway that the race is held on, THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE AND COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT REQUIRE THAT ANY FAMILY OR SPECTATOR VEHICLES PARK ONLY WHERE THERE IS A PULL-OUT. PARKING BETWEEN THE ROADWAY AND A GUARD RAIL IMPEDES THE NORMAL FLOW OF VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, ENDANGERS THE RACERS, AND JEOPARDIZES THE FUTURE PERMITTING OF THE RACE.
- Helmets are REQUIRED.
- For Solo riders- drafting is prohibited. (Does not apply to registered Team riders)
- Time Cut is at 12:30PM.
- NOTE: Racers should not use the public restroom facilities at the U.S. Forest Service Saco Ranger Station near the START area.
- There will be portable toilets at the Kennett M.S. parking lot and at the START and FINISH areas.
- All Racers are responsible for their own transportation back after finishing. Cycling back down, single file, is allowed. Otherwise, carpooling is recommended.
- Racers and those providing Racer transportation must not block or impede the roadway or access to any part of the Course and due to limited parking and available space are asked to leave the FINISH area as quickly as possible after the racer's arrival.
- Any protests must be made to the Race Director at crankthekanc@mwvbicyclingclub.org, prior to or within 24 hours immediately following the posting of the results on: www.crankthekanc.com.
- The Race Director has the final say regarding any disputes.
- Any participant in this event who refuses to fully cooperate with event personnel or these guidelines will be subject to disqualification.
- Disqualification will result in a DISQ and forfeiture of the registration fee.
- The rules and guidelines provided here and on Bike Reg are subject to change as necessary. We will do our best to minimize changes after the start of registration.
Important: Anyone who has been knowingly exposed to, is experiencing symptoms typical of, or has tested positive for COVID within 7 days prior to race day should not participate in this event. Contact the Race Director at crankthekanc@mwvbicyclingclub.org for voucher information for the following year's event.
